continuation of clauses...

Practically, there are 2 main types of clauses: dependent clause & independent clause.

Independent clause can stand as a sentence because it doesn't need to rely on another part of sentence. For e.g. I love Justin Timberlake.

Dependent clause need to rely on certain words because of the existence of words like if, because, since, although....

There are 3 types of dependent clauses: Noun clause, Adjective Clause, Adverb Clause.

Noun clause & adjective clause look similar because they consist of words like what, that, which, whatever, whichever, whoever...

One main difference about these two is:
a) noun clause is used "subject" or "object" of the sentence.
For example,
Whatever I did is none of your business. (as subject)
I don't care whatever you want to do. (as object)

b) adjective clause is used to describe the "things" mentioned in the sentence.
For example,
The girl, who was my ex-girlfriend, is going out with Benny now. (ex-girlfriend describing the girl)
The dress, which Jiayie is wearing, is beautiful. (what Jiayie is wearing describing the dress)
Here comes Chan Tong, who is the winner of Malaysia Idol. (winner of Malaysian Idol describing Chan Tong).

Adjective Clause is even easier because it has "funny funny" words like as, since, although, because ....
so...if you come across these funny words, the first thing that comes to your mind should be adverb clause!!!

okay...that's about it. Hope you guys can understand this short explanation :)

phrases & clauses: confused?

Dear all,

This week we've talked about Phrases & Clauses.
Well, I was a bit scared because of all the confusing faces in class when I talked about them.
It was as if everyone's jaws were almost dropping.

Hmmm....

Actually, they aren't something very hard. It's a bit confusing at first. But once you get the concept right, everything will fall into place. Trust me.
And by the way, I won't be going in depth for these topics because you aren't exactly gonna use it unless you are really interested in it or you wanna become a teacher in future.
So, this is just something extra to be added in your knowledge.
Therefore, be relaxed.

The past semester's students were extremely experts in these 2 topics.
I think it'll be good to go through the exercise and from there, you can actually see how the pattern goes.

So before, signing off, I shall make a quick revision for these 2 topics, at least to get them stuck in your head for this weekend :)

PHRASES:
- group of words without subject / without predicate / without both
- 3 types :
  • appositive phrase: to give extra information / description about an object
e.g: Jenny, my English Foundation teacher, is a kind-hearted person. (:P)

  • prepositional phrase: a phrase which contains a preposition in its beginning
e.g: I saw Jenny walking along the beach.

  • verbal phrases: gerund phrase, participial phrase, infinitive phrase
  • gerund phrase: a phrase which contains a gerund in its beginning
e.g: Travelling around the world has always been Jenny's dream.
(note that travelling around the world is used as the subject of the sentence)
  • participial phrase: a phrase which contains a participle in its beginning
e.g: Travelling around the world, the dream which Jenny always fascinates about.
(note that travelling around the world refers directly to 'the dream'. there's always an
object right in front or after the participle)
  • infinitive phrase: a phrase which contains infinitive in its beginning (to + verb)
e.g: To travel around the world has always been Jenny's dream.
  • verb phrase: usually contain words like "may be", "have been", "shall be", "must be" ....

Dear babies, my head also going burst with this, I hope this short revision will help to have a clearer idea of what phrases are. I'll continue the clauses tomorrow in another entry.

Take care :)

Have a good night :)

A Quick Update for October :)

Dear fantastic students,

October is here! How fast time flies.
Well, we are done with test and also some other little stuff, so it's time for the real & dry work..
LOL..

Starting from this week, we are gonna do a lot of technical stuff like phrases & clauses, sentences, paragraphs & essay..

So, all of you must be able to produce good pieces of essay! Yup, it's compulsory.

After that, we shall continue with more relaxed stuff like movie review, presentation and text analysis.

So, I suppose looking at visual or listening to songs in classroom is definitely better than me "singing" in the classroom. LOL

The previous posted blog is the deadline for the submission of work. I'll be giving you a piece of checklist as well to keep track of your progress. So, that makes life easier for you and I.

Lastly, before I sign off, just want to remind that Friday is the submission of lyrics analysis.

Alright, see you peeps in class.

Quiz Bee Canceled....

Dear wonderful students,

I'm sad to announce that the Quiz Bee that is to be held this Friday 11am is canceled.
Apparently, there's some time classes with the English Language Society schedule.
So, I won't be choosing any participants this time round.

However, I hope that next time we can all join such activities :)

Take care :)
