Quick Revision!

PARTS OF SPEECH

1. nouns - words used to name a person, animal, place, thing or abstract idea

2. verbs - words used to express actions

3. adjectives - words used to describe nouns / pronouns

4. adverbs - words used to describe verbs

5. pronouns - words to replace nouns (e.g: he, she, it, I, you, they, we...)

6. conjunctions - words used to link words, phrases, clauses or sentences

7. prepositions - words used to show relationship or position of a subject

8. interjections -  words used to express feelings or emotion

TENSES

1. present simple - used in situations to describe truths, facts, a series of actions or 

things that happen on regular basis

2. present continuous - 'am' / 'is' / 'are' + present participle (e.g: am going, are walking)

   to describe action in progress 

3. past simple - completed action in the past

4. past continuous - 'was' / 'were' + present participle (e.g: was going, were walking)

completed action in the past but action was going during the time 

of speaking

5. past perfect - 'had' + past participle (e.g: had gone, had walked)

to describe an action which was completed before a time in the 

past

example: Jenny said that she had seen a ghost

explanation: 30th May 2009 - Today

29th May 2009 - Yesterday I met Jenny and she

      said something

29th May 2008 - Jenny saw a ghost one year ago

6. past perfect continuous - 'had been' + present participle (e.g: had been walking)

7. present perfect simple - 'has' / 'have' + past participle (e.g: has walked, have taken)

to describe things that started in the past but still 

continuing in the present / may happen in the future

example: Jenny has lived in Puncak Banyan Apartment 

    (PBA) since last year.

explanation: 1st January 2008 -  Jenny moves in to PBA.

NOW!!! - Jenny still lives in PBA.

8. present perfect continuous - 'has' / 'have' + been + present participle 

(e.g: has been talking) 

to describe action which began in the past and is still 

continuing or has just finished.

     example: Jenny has been reading all afternoon.

explanation: 12pm - Jenny starts to read

3pm   - still reading...

5pm - now finish

Dear students,

Past simple, present perfect simple and present perfect continuous has some similarities and we will easily get confused. Please pay attention to these because they can be quite confusing. we will have our first outing next Saturday 6th June 2009 to watch Monsters vs. Aliens 3D in Mid Valley..

as saturday will b a packed day, i hope that we can confirm by next thursday so that we can book or buy the tickets in advanced to avoid queueing or disappointment of not getting the tickets..

Just some thoughts....

First of all, I want to thank Jia Wen for being the first brave girl to post an entry in this blog..

*clap clap*.. so as the reward, how about a piece of secret recipe cake? you get to choose the flavour you want...remember to claim it from me in the class...*while stock lasts.....*hahahaha..

Anyway people, feel free to share your thoughts and please don't get stressed about the grammar, tenses or spellings..nobody's gonna laugh at you..and look, sometimes I used short forms isn't it? and I made mistakes...a lot of mistakes...so if you don't start talking or writing, things are not going to improve anyway...

I was talking to my former lecturer the other day and we talked about English. Well, we came to a conclusion that one could never be perfect in a language because word itself means differently in different context. And, languages evolve from day to day. What is not acceptable in the past might be something acceptable now. So, the most important thing is that, keep your interest going and learn as much as you could. 

I am not perfect in English and I do get scare when I talk in front of people. I mean, that's natural. Not something to be worried or embarrassed about.

Talking about movies, I've watched 3 movies- Sniper, Angels & Demons and X-men Origins during the past 2 weeks. Those movies are good. I plan to watch Night in the Museum 2 and also Monsters vs. Aliens for the next week. Don't laugh at me but I am a serious mad cartoon fan!! woohooo....So, anyone wants to join me?

Basically, you can discuss and share on anything..but of course, nothing too personal or..too obscene...(and I suppose you won't...)

If you guys don't start talking, I'm juz gonna get back to the boring and formal setting of posting lecture notes and exercises here....(yes, this is a threat!!!)

Anyway, sorry for the delay of posting blogs because I'm not exactly an IT savvy person (that means I could still survive without Internet..muahahahaha :D) so I NEED HELP from everyone to make here a 'happening' place...wooohooo....

Besides discussion, we can also organise outings through here if everyone is okay with it..

Well...i love movies..so probably we could organise some movie outings some day..

A very warm welcome to everyone and thanks for dropping by to this site..

I have just created this account for the purpose of a more fun and interesting learning and teaching interaction..

This site will be more of informal discussions compared to what we have in the formal classroom settings.

Well, this site needs active participation from everyone and I do hope that it will help you academically and will also help you to express what you usually won't respond to in class. :)

Frankly speaking, I am not good in blogs and I understand that some of you might be a more expert blogger than I am, so please bear with the boring layouts..

For me, I would enjoy a friendly learning setting compared to the very formal and strict ones but of course, different people see things differently. I hope that we will not be stuck only inside the classroom, but I would be really glad if we could make some activities out of the classroom.

This place is for everyone to share their experience and express their thoughts. Feel free to drop a message or a comment if you just feel like sharing..

By the way, I've thought of 'facebooking' as well. Which one do you think will work best? Let me know.
